Isaac J. Knowles diary and Ladies Union Aid Society record book, 1865, 1888-1897.

The Civil War diary of Isaac J. Knowles, 8th Regiment, Maine Volunteers, kept during 1865. Accompanying the diary is a typescript transcription. The 8th Maine served from 1861-1866 and was at Appomattox in 1865; the entry in Knowles' s diary (Apr. 9, 1865) mentions Lee's surrender. Knowles also includes details about weather, his health, camp activities, battles, marches, and post-war duties around Richmond, Virginia. Also included are list of prices for clothing, list of casualties, and "Members of Co. D now present". Typescript was made by Frederick R. Johnson, who received the diary from his mother, she, in turn, from her mother, Nora K. Cleveland, daughter of Isaac Knowles. Record book of the Ladies Aid Society of Portland, Maine formed on January 5, 1888 to aid in church charitable work. Included are names of the elected officers, records of meetings, secretary's records, and membership lists from 1889 to 1897.
